Madame Lutandila-Nzuzi deserves recognition for DR Congo’s success

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s men’s national team is on the verge of advancing to the next round of the 2026 World Cup in the lead up to their final group game against Uzbekistan. This would be an historic moment for Les Leopards if they were to realize this feat. The players and manager would undoubtedly get the recognition for making this achievement, and rightly so. But there is one person who deserves special recognition that would otherwise go under the radar: Belinda Luntadila-Nzuzi.

In April 2023, FIFA ordered a normalization committee to be organized to assist with the running of the Democratic Republic of Congo football governing body, FECOFA, after the DR Congo football couldn’t ensure stable elections. Normalization committees are seen as a last resort, and it’s often followed by a suspension of the football governing body and its teams from competing in various tournaments. They are forbidden from interacting with other football entities. But the Democratic Republic of Congo football didn’t face a suspension. Madame Luntadila-Nzuzi’s role was to serve as the head of DRC football and help stabilize the federation. She’s witnessed some events, such as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and their accusation of the DRC fielding ineligible players in their World Cup qualifying matches. She also saw DRC qualify for the World Cup. Both events were handled avec classe.

So what exactly is a normalization committee, and what are the reasons for their implementation? Here are some quotes from an article from LawInSport that provides a breakdown.

“The appointment of a normalisation committee is regarded as a last resort, when FIFA considers that the domestic governance of the game has irretrievably broken down. The constitution of a normalisation committee usually follows the suspension of a member association by the Council, where that member association is unable to confirm that it has demonstrated that it is able to comply with the requisite principles of good governance. Whilst suspended, a member association loses all of its membership rights as defined in Article 13 of the Statutes, and national and affiliated club teams are not entitled to take part in international competitions until the suspension is lifted. Other member associations are also not permitted to have sporting contact with the member association during its suspension.”

Several football nations have experienced this type of experience before, the intervention of FIFA with the noramzliation committee. Kuwait, Mali, and Uruguay experienced FIFA intervention before. And it’s a temporary infrastructure.

But now that Madame Luntadila’s role as the face of DR Congo football is no more (now that FECOFA held elections and selected former CAF Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba as their new president) she deserves credit for the team’s successes.

Celebrations will happen in DRC on June 30 to commemorate DR Congo’s 66 years of independence. Hopefully, those celebrations will also be for a Round of 32 qualification.
